How to source bulk T-shirts from Tiruppur, India

By the KnitScout sourcing team · Last reviewed 14 Oct 2026 · ~6 min read

Tiruppur is India's knitwear capital and the natural place to produce cotton T-shirts at scale. This is the process a careful buyer follows — and the decisions that determine whether your order ships on time, on spec and on budget.

1. Define the product before you ask for a price

A quote is only as good as the specification behind it. Prepare a tech pack (or at least a clear reference) covering: garment style and fit, fabric (knit type, GSM, yarn count and composition), colours, the full size breakdown, trims and labels, print or embroidery, and packaging. The more precise this is, the sharper and more comparable your quotes will be.

2. Choose how you'll buy: direct factory or buying house

You can approach factories directly, or work through a buying house that selects and manages factories on your behalf. Direct can look cheaper on paper; a buying house adds vendor selection, sampling, merchandising and quality control, and gives you one accountable point of contact across the order — which usually pays for itself on your first avoided problem.

3. Sample in stages

Don't jump to bulk. Typical sampling stages:

StagePurpose
Proto / development sampleProve the design and construction
Fit sampleConfirm measurements and fit per size
Size setCheck grading across the size range
Pre-production (PP) sampleFinal approved reference in bulk fabric/trims — the benchmark production is judged against

4. Understand what drives cost and MOQ

T-shirt cost is driven mainly by fabric (weight/GSM, yarn count, composition), order quantity, number of colours and sizes, and value-adds like prints or special finishes. Minimum order quantities exist because fabric is knitted and dyed in batches. Typical bulk programmes run roughly 5,000–50,000 pieces; smaller runs are possible for some products but usually carry a higher per-piece cost. See GSM selection for how fabric weight moves the price.

5. Place the order and lock the critical path

Confirm the PO, approve bulk fabric and trims, and agree the critical path — the dated milestones (fabric in, cutting, approvals, finishing, inspection, dispatch) worked backwards from your ship window. This is where delays are prevented rather than explained.

6. Control quality in the factory, not on arrival

Inspect during production (in-line) and at the end (final), to an agreed AQL, with photo reports. For T-shirts, also plan lab tests where relevant — dimensional stability (shrinkage), colourfastness to washing and rubbing, and spirality. Checking in Tiruppur means problems surface before shipment.

7. Export and ship

Finish with pre-shipment documentation and forwarder coordination through to loading and dispatch. Agree Incoterms up front so responsibilities and costs are clear.
