How to prepare an apparel tech pack
A clear tech pack is the single thing that most speeds up accurate quoting and right-first-time samples. Here's what a tech pack is, what to put in it, and what to do if you don't have one yet.
What a tech pack is
A tech pack (technical package) is the specification document that tells a factory exactly how to make your garment. It removes guesswork: the same tech pack lets different suppliers quote on a like-for-like basis, and it becomes the reference the production and quality teams work to. A vague brief gets a vague (and often padded) price; a clear tech pack gets a sharp one.
What to include
- Technical sketch — flat front/back drawings (and any detail call-outs) of the garment.
- Points of measure (POM) — a measurement chart with the key dimensions and tolerances, for a base size and the grade across the size set.
- Fabric spec — fibre/composition, knit construction, GSM, yarn count and type.
- Colours — reference by Pantone (TCX/TPG) or a physical standard, not just a name.
- Trims & components — thread, ribs, drawcords, zips, buttons, interlinings.
- Artwork & placement — prints/embroidery files, sizes, positions and technique.
- Labelling — main label, care/content label, size label and any law-label requirements for your market.
- Packaging — folding, polybag, hang tag, carton and barcode/GTIN requirements.
- Quantities — target units per style, colour and size, plus target price and delivery window.
If you don't have a tech pack yet
You don't need a perfect one to start. The fastest substitute is a reference garment — a sample we can measure and match — plus photos and a short note on what to change. We can develop a proper tech pack and first samples from a reference, a sketch, or even a clear description and inspiration images.
Why it pays off
A good tech pack shortens the whole front end: quicker and more comparable quotes, fewer sampling rounds, fewer costly misunderstandings in bulk, and a clear standard for quality inspection to check against. It is the cheapest insurance in the sourcing process.
